Hurco Companies, Inc. was founded on October 24, 1968 in Indianapolis, Indiana by Gerald Roch and Edward Humston. The name itself is a compression of the founders and the word company, HU from Humston, R from Roch and CO from Company. It is Windows based and it supports three programming methods on the same machine: conversational programming, standard NC or G-code programming and a NC/Conversational Merge mode that blends the two. That flexibility is the reason a shop can put a manual machinist and a CAM programmer on the same Hurco without retraining either one from scratch.
MAX5 is the control hardware, the console generation that runs WinMax. Hurco introduced the MAX5 console powered by WinMax around 2016, so on the used market you will see older machines running earlier WinMax hardware and newer machines carrying the MAX5 designation. The published MAX5 specification includes 4GB of RAM, a 10,000 block look-ahead, a 128GB solid state drive and a 2.7GHz dual core processor. When a listing says WinMax control, it is describing the software. When it says MAX5, it is telling you the console generation. Both details affect resale value, so they are worth confirming on any used purchase before the paperwork is drawn.
The vertical machining centers
Hurco splits its vertical machining centers into a general-purpose family and a high-performance family, with large double-column and five-axis machines above them.
The VM series is the general-purpose 3-axis line. These are the machines that get a small or growing shop into a Hurco at a reasonable cost. A representative VM10i carries a 15 HP spindle, 10,000 RPM, a CAT40 taper and a 20-tool automatic tool changer, with travels around 26 inches by 16 inches by 20 inches. Step up to a VM-20i and you get a 20 HP spindle, 12,000 RPM and larger travels near 40 inches by 20 inches by 20 inches. The VM line is built on a one-piece cast iron frame with a compact footprint, which is a selling point for shops that are tight on floor space.
The VMX series is the high-performance 3-axis line. It covers a wide envelope, with travels ranging from roughly 24 inches by 20 inches on the smaller models up to 84 inches by 34 inches on the largest. The family runs through the VMX24, VMX30, VMX42, VMX50, VMX60, VMX64 and VMX84, including heavier variants such as the VMX84Ti. These machines add rigidity, spindle power and travel over the VM line, so they land with shops running harder materials or larger parts.
Above the standard 3-axis machines Hurco offers 5-axis configurations, including integrated trunnion-table models such as the VMX30Ui and swivel-head designs. The suffix matters here. A "Ui" or "i" designation signals the specific configuration, and a genuine 5-axis Hurco commands a very different price than a 3-axis machine of the same base size. For large parts there is the DCX double-column series, built for energy, aerospace and other heavy sectors, available in both 3-axis and 5-axis forms.
The double-column layout is the reason a DCX can hold tolerance across a wide table. Because the gantry bridges both sides of the work envelope, the spindle stays centered and supported no matter where it travels, which matters on long, heavy parts like turbine housings or press dies that would flex a single-column machine. Swivel-head 5-axis Hurcos put the rotary motion at the spindle rather than the table, which suits large or heavy workpieces that would be awkward to tilt on a trunnion.
The turning centers
On the lathe side, the TM series is the general-purpose 2-axis turning center line. A TM8 typically ships with an 8-inch chuck, a 10-position turret, a tailstock and a maximum turning diameter around 14 inches. These are approachable slant-bed lathes that give a shop a clean path from manual turning into CNC.
The TMX series is the performance turning line. It adds horsepower and torque, more rigidity, faster rapids and a programmable tailstock, and it opens up multi-axis capability through live tooling designated M, a Y-axis designated Y and sub-spindles designated S. A model coded TMX8MYS, for example, combines all three. The more of those letters a machine carries, the more it can do in a single setup, and the more its price reflects that capability.
Used Hurco price bands
Used pricing is where financing decisions get real, so here are current dealer listings rather than blanket ranges. All figures below were observed on 2026-09-12.
On CNCMachines.com, standard-configuration 3-axis machines from the mid-2000s cluster in a lower band. A 2006 VM1 was listed at $15,000, a 2007 VMX30 at $17,500, 2006 VMX24 machines at $24,500 and $27,000, a 2006 VM2 at $24,500, a 2006 VMX42 at $27,000 and a 2005 VMX42 at $30,000, with a 2005 VMX64 at $33,000. That puts a clean, older 3-axis Hurco roughly in the $15,000 to $35,000 range depending on size and options.
Newer or better-equipped 3-axis machines sit meaningfully higher. The same dealer showed a 2017 VM10i at $50,000, a 2013 VM10U at $66,000 and a 2022 VM20i at $89,500. An equipped 2018 VM10 with a bar feeder and chip conveyor was listed at $186,000, which is an outlier that shows how much tooling and automation can add to a base machine. As a working band, newer or well-optioned 3-axis Hurcos from about 2012 forward commonly run $50,000 to $90,000 and up.
Five-axis machines carry their own premium. On Equipt, roughly six VMX42Ui listings aggregated to about $418,380 in listed value, which averages near $70,000 per unit, and a genuine 5-axis Hurco should be expected to sit well above a 3-axis machine of similar base size.
Turning centers follow the same logic. On CNCMachines.com a 2005 TM8 was listed at $24,000, a 2013 TM8i at $28,500 and a 2019 TM8i at $79,500. So a used Hurco lathe runs roughly $24,000 at the older end to around $80,000 for a recent, capable TM8i, with multi-axis TMX machines above that.
Every one of these numbers moves with year, spindle hours, tooling, the presence of a 4th or 5th axis and general condition. Treat the bands as a planning tool, then confirm the specific machine before you commit.
How to finance a Hurco

A fair market value lease keeps monthly payments lower and gives you options at the end of the term to buy at the then-current value, return the machine or upgrade. This structure fits shops that expect to rotate into newer technology, for example a shop that wants to move from a 3-axis VMX into a 5-axis VMX Ui in a few years as work mixes shift.
For shops with uneven cash flow, seasonal or step payment structures can align the payment schedule with revenue. A fabricator ramping a new contract might defer or reduce early payments while the job spins up, then move to full payments once the machine is earning.
A sale-leaseback works in the other direction, for a shop that already owns a Hurco outright and wants to free up the capital tied up in it.
