Agilent's ICP-MS lineup ranges from single-quadrupole systems built for routine trace metals analysis to triple-quadrupole ICP-MS systems designed for more demanding interference control, high-purity materials and advanced applications. For a laboratory financing an Agilent ICP-MS, the exact model matters. An Agilent 7850, 7900, 8900 ICP-QQQ and newer 9500 ICP-QQQ are different instruments with different capabilities, configurations and acquisition costs. Like Agilent's LC-MS and GC-MS systems, the exact model matters enormously for how a transaction should be structured.

The secondary market adds another layer. Laboratories may encounter 7500 and 7700-series instruments, the superseded 7800, the earlier 8800 ICP-QQQ and other configurations alongside newer systems. Understanding the Agilent ICP-MS Lineup

Agilent currently offers single-quadrupole ICP-MS and triple-quadrupole ICP-MS, commonly referred to as ICP-QQQ or ICP-MS/MS. Understanding that distinction is important both analytically and financially.

The Agilent 7850 ICP-MS is a single-quadrupole instrument aimed at routine ICP-MS workflows, positioned around reducing common workflow bottlenecks in routine elemental analysis. The Agilent 7900 ICP-MS is Agilent's higher-performance single-quadrupole ICP-MS platform, positioned for demanding commercial and industrial applications as well as advanced work including single-particle ICP-MS, single-cell analysis, laser ablation and speciation. That distinction matters when a laboratory is choosing between a 7850 and 7900. Both are single-quadrupole Agilent ICP-MS instruments but they are not interchangeable assets. The Agilent 9500 ICP-QQQ is Agilent's newest triple-quadrupole ICP-MS platform, launched in 2026. Agilent designed the 9500 to make ICP-MS/MS accessible for laboratories moving beyond conventional single-quadrupole ICP-MS without necessarily requiring every advanced reaction-gas capability of the 8900. The 9500 uses Agilent's Dual-Cell System with Advanced Helium Mode and Air mode for interference removal. Agilent states that the standard configuration uses helium and filtered ambient air, while an optional configuration can add additional gas controllers for more advanced applications. This creates a particularly relevant upgrade path for laboratories. Agilent specifically positions the 9500 as suitable for labs upgrading from standard single-quadrupole ICP-MS and says it can serve as a direct replacement for a single-quadrupole system in many workflows. From a financing standpoint, that means a 9500 purchase may represent more than routine equipment replacement. A laboratory may be moving from single-quadrupole ICP-MS into true MS/MS capability while maintaining workflows familiar to its existing ICP-MS operators.

The Agilent 8900 ICP-QQQ remains Agilent's advanced triple-quadrupole ICP-MS platform, and Agilent has confirmed that the new 9500 does not replace the 8900. The 8900 uses tandem mass spectrometry with two quadrupole mass filters and a collision/reaction cell to provide controlled reaction chemistry in MS/MS mode. Agilent offers configurations for applications ranging from contract analysis to advanced research and high-purity materials including semiconductor applications. This distinction between the 8900 and 9500 is important. A financing request should not describe either instrument merely as Agilent triple quad ICP-MS. The exact model and configuration identify what the laboratory is actually acquiring and provide the lender with a clearer understanding of the collateral. The 8900 may also be configured with specialized sample-introduction systems and gas infrastructure depending on the application, and those supporting components should be identified in the complete equipment package.

Current Agilent ICP-MS Systems vs. the Used Market

The used Agilent ICP-MS market extends well beyond the current lineup. Agilent's own current support resources continue to reference the 7500, 7700, 7800, 7850, 7900, 8800 and 8900 systems, and Agilent's newest OpenLab ICP-MS software supports the 7800, 7850, 7900, 8900 and 9500. The 7500 Series represents an earlier generation of Agilent ICP-MS, which Agilent subsequently replaced with the 7700 Series in configurations such as the 7700x and 7700s. The 7800 ICP-MS came later and has now been superseded by the 7850 according to Agilent. For triple-quadrupole systems, the Agilent 8800 ICP-QQQ was introduced in 2012 as Agilent's first ICP-QQQ, the 8900 subsequently built on the 8800 platform, and the 9500 now adds another triple-quadrupole option to Agilent's lineup.

This history matters to secondary-market buyers because model generation alone does not answer whether an instrument is a reasonable acquisition. Condition, support, configuration, service history, application and price all need to be evaluated. A maintained 7700-series system being sold with clear documentation is a very different transaction from an unidentified older ICP-MS being sold as-is after sitting idle. Financing a New Agilent ICP-MS or ICP-QQQ

A new Agilent ICP-MS transaction generally begins with a detailed equipment quote identifying the instrument and its configuration. The financing request should include the complete quote because an ICP-MS purchase can include much more than the main instrument. Used and refurbished Agilent ICP-MS systems can be financeable but older instruments require good documentation. Upgrading From an Older Agilent ICP-MS

Agilent's product history creates several natural replacement and upgrade paths. A laboratory may replace a 7500 or 7700-series system with a newer 7850 or 7900, a 7800 owner may move to the 7850 which Agilent identifies as the 7800's successor, and a laboratory may also move from single-quadrupole ICP-MS into the newer 9500 ICP-QQQ or into the more advanced 8900 ICP-QQQ. Triple-quadrupole users have their own path, since the 8800 preceded the 8900 and laboratories evaluating newer ICP-MS/MS capability now also have the 9500 available.

"Agilent ICP-MS" describes too broad an asset class for proper equipment underwriting. A 7850 and 7900 are single-quadrupole instruments. A 9500 and 8900 are triple-quadrupole ICP-MS systems. An 8800 is an earlier ICP-QQQ platform, while 7500, 7700 and 7800 instruments represent earlier generations of Agilent single-quadrupole ICP-MS.
