A Citizen financing request should identify more than the brand and bar diameter because current Cincom platforms range from relatively straightforward A20 and L-series machines to D25 and M-series configurations with more complex tooling and overlapping operations. Understanding the Machine Lineup
A20
Citizen currently lists the A20 as a cost-efficient Cincom turning center. It belongs in the smaller-diameter production tier and should be quoted with its exact suffix, bar feeder and tooling package.
D25
Citizen currently lists the D25 with independent gang slides and positions it for pinch-turning capability. Current European model listings include D25-1M7 and D25-1M8 configurations.
L12
Citizen describes the L12 as its small-diameter production platform. Current listings include L12-1M7 and L12-2M10. Citizen also documents guide-bush and non-guide-bush changeover on current L12 configurations.
L20
Citizen calls the L20 an industry-standard platform in its U.S. lineup. Current model listings include L20-3M8, L20-3M10, L20-3M12 and B5/ATC variants. Exact suffix matters because tooling capacity and machining capability can differ.
L32
Citizen's current L32 family covers 1 1/4-inch class work (32mm, 38mm optional) and includes several 1M and 2M configurations plus a B5 variant. An ATC variant for the L32 could not be confirmed on current sources and should be verified before publication. This is a higher-capacity Cincom class than L12 or L20.
M-Series
Citizen currently lists M16 and M32 variants in its European model overview. The M-series belongs at the more complex end of Cincom production. Verify exact U.S. configuration availability before purchase.
Current Machines vs. the Used and Secondary Market
Used Citizen buyers regularly search earlier L12, L20, L32 and M32 generations. Model names remain familiar while suffixes, controls and tool layouts change. A used L20 with a clean Citizen-compatible bar feeder and documented spindle condition is a materially different package from a machine missing key tooling or guide-bush hardware.
Financing a New Machine
A new Cincom often supports a specific family of precision parts. The shop should show the complete machine, bar feeder, high-pressure coolant and tooling package. Financing can potentially include the production equipment needed to run the job, subject to review.
Financing a Used or Refurbished Machine
Used Swiss-type equipment is a normal part of the machine-tool market. The key is documenting the exact machine and its condition. Prepare the exact brand and model, serial number and year, control make, model and generation, maximum bar diameter and guide-bush configuration, main-spindle and sub-spindle hours when available, guide-bush, spindle and collet condition, live-tool and cross-working attachment condition, bar feeder make, model and condition, tooling and holders included, current running condition and alarm history, service records and known repairs, an inspection report or running video when available, and rigging, freight and installation quotes. Guide-bush condition, spindle condition, bar-feeder setup, live-tool condition and control generation can matter as much as the machine year. A running video or inspection report is particularly useful on a complex multi-axis Swiss machine.
Upgrading or Adding Capacity
Upgrades can move a shop from smaller L12 work into L20 or L32 capacity, from simpler L-series production into M-series complexity or from an older generation into current controls and tooling. Explain whether the change adds diameter, overlapping operations, B-axis capability, unattended runtime or serviceability.
Buying From a Dealer, Auction or Another Shop
Used Swiss lathes are commonly bought from machine-tool dealers, auctions and other precision shops. Dealer transactions can be cleaner because the dealer may provide model information, video, inspection, bar-feeder details and rigging support. Auction financing should be addressed before bidding because payment and removal windows can be short. Direct shop-to-shop purchases can potentially be financed but ownership, liens, location, condition and serial number generally need additional verification.
Don't Forget Bar Feeders, Tooling, Workholding and Automation
A Swiss-type machine project can include much more than the lathe. Common supporting equipment includes a magazine bar feeder, guide-bush tooling, collets, carbide guide bushings, live-tool holders, cross-drilling attachments, thread-whirling units, high-pressure coolant, mist collection, chip conveyors, part conveyors, tool presetting, inspection equipment, CAD/CAM software, postprocessors, fire suppression where required, oil chillers, transformers, rigging, freight and installation. If the machine will not make the intended parts without those items, include them in the project quote.
Citizen Generation and Architecture Deep Dive
Citizen's current Cincom catalog shows how wide the sliding-headstock range has become. The lineup includes A20, B12/16E, L12, L20, L32, D25, M16 and M32 families. The important financing point is that model family and type designation both matter. A basic L20 and a high-end L20 XIIB5 can share the same nominal bar class while having very different axis count, tooling and 5-axis capability.
The current L20 is designated Type VIII. Citizen offers five L20 model levels within that designation, from the cost-focused base configuration through the XIIB5 that supports simultaneous 5-axis control. The new generation also extends LFV capability to front and back machining and uses a higher-output back spindle to improve acceleration and deceleration. That makes generation identification useful on a used L20 because older L20 machines do not automatically carry the same mechanical or control package.
LFV is one of Citizen's most important brand-specific distinctions. Low Frequency Vibration cutting intentionally varies the cutting motion to break chips. For a shop running difficult materials unattended, that can reduce chip wrapping and intervention. LFV availability is model and control dependent so a used listing should state whether the option is actually present rather than merely describing the machine as LFV-capable.
The D25 uses a double gang tool-post architecture with B-axis capability built into the double-gang structure on both the Type VII and Type VIII configurations, and the family can switch between guide-bushing and guide-bushing-less operation. Citizen lists up to 59 tools on the D25VII versus a different tooling count on the D25VIII, which is the real distinction between the two types and part of the asset description.
The M32 is mechanically different again because it combines a gang tool post with a turret. Current M32 literature describes a redesigned turret using a single-drive conversion, with selected rotary tools powered, and B-axis capability on higher configurations. Cincom machines commonly offer guide-bushing and non-guide-bushing configuration, though this has not been independently confirmed for the M32 specifically and should be verified on the quote; selected versions can handle an optional larger bar diameter. A used M32 from an earlier generation should not be assumed to match the current turret, HMI or B-axis architecture.
Why the Exact Citizen Configuration Matters to a Lender
A lender should know whether the machine is an L12, L20, L32, D25 or M32 and then know the exact type within that family. The type can change axis count, back-working capability, B-axis functionality, tool capacity and control. Those differences affect acquisition price and the range of parts the machine can produce.
Guide-bushing conversion hardware also has value. A shop may use guide-bushing mode for long slender parts then convert to guide-bushing-less operation for shorter parts to reduce remnant and stock requirements. If the conversion kit is missing from a used machine, the buyer may not receive the flexibility described in the listing.
Condition review should cover the sliding headstock, guide-bushing area, main and back spindles, gang slides, turret on M-series machines, live-tool motors, B-axis hardware, coolant system and bar-feeder interface. LFV and advanced control options should be demonstrated rather than assumed from the model year.
Building a Complete Citizen Financing Package
Provide the full Cincom model and type, serial number, year, Mitsubishi control model where identified, LFV option status, guide-bushing conversion hardware, bar feeder, high-pressure coolant, mist collection, parts handling and complete tooling package. For M32 and B-axis L-series machines, identify the turret, B-axis and adjustable-angle tooling included.
For used equipment, add spindle hours when available, running videos, service records, live-tool test results, guide-bushing and headstock condition, crash history when known and a detailed toolholder inventory. Include rigging, freight, installation and bar-feeder commissioning so the financing request reflects the machine as it will actually enter production.
Why the Exact Model, Control and Condition Matter to a Lender
Citizen uses many suffixes inside the same family. An L20-3M8 and L20-3M12B5 should not be described as the same asset. Exact control, guide-bush capability, tooling stations, bar feeder and condition matter to secondary-market value.
What You'll Need to Finance the Machine
Start with the complete machine quote or purchase agreement. Useful information includes the exact machine model and year, serial number, seller or dealer, purchase price, control make and generation, maximum bar capacity and guide-bush configuration, spindle hours when available, main and sub-spindle condition, live tooling and driven-tool configuration, bar feeder and material-handling equipment, included tooling and workholding, an inspection or running video for used machines, rigging and freight, installation and training costs, business information and ownership, and a brief explanation of the parts and production volume the machine will support. Qualifying smaller transactions may be eligible for application-only financing. Larger or more complex machine acquisitions may require additional business and financial documentation.
Used-Machine Due Diligence Before Closing
Before a used Swiss or Swiss-style machine closes, the buyer should reconcile the dealer quote with the physical machine. Confirm the serial plate, control, bar capacity, spindle configuration and every option that materially affects the production plan. Run the main spindle and sub spindle through their useful speed ranges, index or move every tool group and test live tools under load when practical. A machine that powers up but cannot demonstrate its back-working, B-axis or live-tool functions should not be documented as though those systems were proven.
The tooling inventory deserves its own line-by-line review. Swiss tooling can include guide bushings, collets, driven-tool holders, cross-working units, thread-whirling attachments and proprietary cartridges. Missing holders can turn an attractive purchase price into a larger commissioning bill. The bar feeder should be identified by model and serial number and the buyer should confirm that the channel set or conversion parts match the stock diameters it intends to run.
Finally, build the move into the transaction. Seller-side deinstallation, rigging, freight, buyer-side unloading, leveling, electrical work, coolant fill, bar-feeder alignment and machine startup are real costs. If the machine is expected to run unattended, include high-pressure coolant, mist collection, fire suppression and parts handling where required by the shop's process and safety plan.
How the Machine Earns Its Keep
The financing case is strongest when the shop connects the machine configuration to a measurable production constraint. Swiss equipment is often justified by a family of parts rather than one isolated job. The buyer may be moving work from cam automatics, reducing secondary milling, replacing several older machines or adding unattended capacity for a contract that already has repeat demand. Cycle time alone is not the only consideration: material remnant, operator intervention, tool life, chip control, inspection frequency and changeover time all influence the economics of a Swiss cell. The application should state the part family, approximate bar diameters, materials, expected production pattern and whether the machine is replacing equipment or expanding capacity.
