That distinction is important for financing accuracy. A shop evaluating NT-Flex may be trying to replace a Swiss process, increase flexibility on short parts or avoid guide-bush and bar-remnant economics. The financed asset is still a multitasking turning center, not a Cincom-style sliding-head automatic lathe.
Understanding the Machine Lineup
NT-Flex
Nakamura-Tome introduced NT-Flex in 2024 and Methods launched it into the U.S. market in late 2025. Methods describes it as a two-turret, two-spindle compact multitasking machine with Y-axis milling aimed at complex high-mix and small-batch production. It is specifically positioned as an answer for Swiss-style machining.
SC-100x2
Methods describes the SC-100x2 as a twin-turret multitasking machine suited to Swiss-style parts greater than 25 mm in diameter. It supports superimposed machining with tools on both sides of the upper turret.
Other Nakamura-Tome Turning Platforms
Nakamura-Tome builds a broad multitasking and twin-spindle turning portfolio. This guide stays focused on machines that Methods or Nakamura-Tome explicitly position against Swiss-style work rather than listing every Nakamura model, and any additional Swiss-alternative model should be verified before it is added to a financing request.
Current Machines vs. the Used and Secondary Market
Because NT-Flex is new, the secondary market for that exact platform will initially be limited. Used buyers are more likely to encounter older Nakamura-Tome twin-spindle or multitasking machines that may be capable of similar part families but were not necessarily marketed as Swiss replacements. Those legacy machines should not be labeled Swiss-style without manufacturer or dealer support.
Financing a New Machine
A new NT-Flex purchase can be financed as a compact multitasking production investment. The business rationale may be high-mix short parts, eliminating second operations, twin-spindle completion or replacing work that would otherwise run on a sliding-head Swiss.
Financing a Used or Refurbished Machine
Used Swiss-type equipment is a normal part of the machine-tool market. The key is documenting the exact machine and its condition. Prepare the exact brand and model, serial number and year, control make, model and generation, maximum bar diameter and guide-bush configuration, main-spindle and sub-spindle hours when available, guide-bush, spindle and collet condition, live-tool and cross-working attachment condition, bar feeder make, model and condition, tooling and holders included, current running condition and alarm history, service records and known repairs, twin-turret alignment and live-tool condition, main and sub-spindle condition, and rigging, freight and installation quotes. Guide-bush condition, spindle condition, bar-feeder setup, live-tool condition and control generation can matter as much as the machine year. A running video or inspection report is particularly useful on a complex multi-axis machine.
Upgrading or Adding Capacity
A shop may move from conventional Swiss into NT-Flex when the work is better suited to compact multitasking, or add NT-Flex beside Swiss machines for short-part and high-mix flexibility. The financing narrative should state why the Nakamura architecture is a better fit for the intended parts.
Buying From a Dealer, Auction or Another Shop
Used Swiss lathes are commonly bought from machine-tool dealers, auctions and other precision shops. Dealer transactions can be cleaner because the dealer may provide model information, video, inspection, bar-feeder details and rigging support. Auction financing should be addressed before bidding because payment and removal windows can be short. Direct shop-to-shop purchases can potentially be financed but ownership, liens, location, condition and serial number generally need additional verification.
Don't Forget Bar Feeders, Tooling, Workholding and Automation
Supporting equipment can include bar feeding, collet or chuck workholding, live-tool holders, tooling, high-pressure coolant, chip management, automation, CAD/CAM, postprocessors, inspection equipment, rigging, freight and installation. Because NT-Flex is not a conventional sliding-head machine, guide-bush tooling should not be listed unless the specific configuration actually uses it, and the exact bar-feeder and automation options should be verified on the quoted machine.
Why NT-Flex Is Swiss-Style Rather Than a Conventional Swiss Automatic
The NT-Flex distinction should remain explicit. Nakamura-Tome identifies it as a two-spindle, two-turret precision CNC multitasking lathe. It does not use the classic sliding-headstock and guide-bushing architecture that defines Citizen Cincom, Star and Tsugami Swiss-type automatics. Methods Machine Tools nevertheless positions the NT-Flex as Nakamura-Tome's answer to Swiss-style machining for selected small-diameter work.
That positioning is based on process economics rather than identical mechanics. Methods specifically points to roughly 25 to 38 mm part sizes where the NT-Flex can bring conventional multitasking rigidity to jobs that might otherwise be considered for Swiss equipment. The machine also offers easier access to the work envelope and tooling than a tightly packed Swiss tool zone. A shop comparing the two should therefore ask whether the part actually needs guide-bushing support or whether a compact twin-spindle multitasking machine can achieve the cycle and tolerance requirement.
The standard NT-Flex uses two spindles and two 24-station turrets. Nakamura-Tome states that quadruple holders can bring the maximum available tool count to 96. Milling and Y-axis capability are standard on the upper turret. The machine also supports Oscillation Cutting and Nakamura-Tome's ChronoCut software for reducing idle time.
The NT-Flex+ is a real configuration step rather than a cosmetic package. Nakamura-Tome announced it with X-axis travel on the right spindle, Y-axis on the lower turret and an optional NC tailstock. That expands the range of simultaneous and shaft-type work the platform can perform. A financing quote should therefore distinguish NT-Flex from NT-Flex+.
Comparing NT-Flex With Swiss-Type Production
A conventional Swiss machine supports the bar near the cut and moves the headstock through a guide bushing. NT-Flex instead approaches small-part productivity through opposed spindles, two turrets, milling and process overlap. For short rigid parts, fittings and components where guide-bushing support is not essential, that can be a compelling alternative. For very long slender parts where support close to the cutting point is fundamental, a true Swiss architecture may remain the better fit.
The tooling economics are different too. A Swiss machine may use gang-tool holders, modular cross tools, thread whirling and guide-bushing hardware. NT-Flex uses turret tooling and can carry a very large number of tools through its turret and holder strategy. Shops with existing Nakamura-Tome tooling or operators may value that commonality.
Automation also differs. Methods describes bar feeders and collection tables as part of unattended NT-Flex production. The machine's Parts Catcher G can be part of that cell. A lender should therefore see the bar feeder and parts-handling package if the business case depends on unattended output.
Why the Exact Nakamura-Tome Configuration Matters to a Lender
Calling the NT-Flex a Swiss lathe would obscure the actual collateral. The lender should record it as a compact twin-spindle, twin-turret multitasking lathe and document why the shop is using it for Swiss-style parts. That makes the asset description more accurate and the productivity story easier to understand. The same discipline applies to SC-100x2.
Condition review should cover both spindles, both turrets, live-tool drives, Y-axis, C-axis, right-spindle transfer, parts catcher and bar-feeder interface. On NT-Flex+ the additional right-spindle X axis, lower-turret Y axis and optional tailstock should be tested if included.
Building a Complete NT-Flex Financing Package
Provide exact NT-Flex or NT-Flex+ designation, serial number, year, control, 32 mm or optional 38 mm bar configuration, turret tooling, live tools, bar feeder, parts catcher, coolant system and automation. Identify whether ChronoCut, Oscillation Cutting or other software options are included.
For used Nakamura-Tome machines being considered for Swiss-style work, include running videos, spindle and turret condition, service history, crash history when known, tooling inventory and proof that the specific part family fits the machine's chucking and transfer strategy. Rigging, freight, installation and bar-feeder commissioning should be included in the project cost.
What You'll Need to Finance the Machine
Start with the complete machine quote or purchase agreement. Useful information includes the exact machine model and year, serial number, seller or dealer, purchase price, control make and generation, maximum bar capacity and guide-bush configuration, spindle hours when available, main and sub-spindle condition, live tooling and driven-tool configuration, bar feeder and material-handling equipment, included tooling and workholding, an inspection or running video for used machines, rigging and freight, installation and training costs, business information and ownership, and a brief explanation of the parts and production volume the machine will support. Qualifying smaller transactions may be eligible for application-only financing. Larger or more complex machine acquisitions may require additional business and financial documentation.
Used-Machine Due Diligence Before Closing
Before a used Swiss or Swiss-style machine closes, the buyer should reconcile the dealer quote with the physical machine. Confirm the serial plate, control, bar capacity, spindle configuration and every option that materially affects the production plan. Run the main spindle and sub spindle through their useful speed ranges, index or move every tool group and test live tools under load when practical. A machine that powers up but cannot demonstrate its back-working, B-axis or live-tool functions should not be documented as though those systems were proven.
The tooling inventory deserves its own line-by-line review. Missing holders can turn an attractive purchase price into a larger commissioning bill. The bar feeder should be identified by model and serial number and the buyer should confirm that the channel set or conversion parts match the stock diameters it intends to run.
Finally, build the move into the transaction. Seller-side deinstallation, rigging, freight, buyer-side unloading, leveling, electrical work, coolant fill, bar-feeder alignment and machine startup are real costs. If the machine is expected to run unattended, include high-pressure coolant, mist collection, fire suppression and parts handling where required by the shop's process and safety plan.
How the Machine Earns Its Keep
The financing case is strongest when the shop connects the machine configuration to a measurable production constraint. The buyer may be moving work from cam automatics, reducing secondary milling, replacing several older machines or adding unattended capacity for a contract that already has repeat demand. The application should state the part family, approximate bar diameters, materials, expected production pattern and whether the machine is replacing equipment or expanding capacity.
