Environmental history deserves attention because FTIR optical components can be sensitive to moisture. Ask how the instrument was stored, whether it remained powered or purged and whether desiccant maintenance was performed. A recent background spectrum and manufacturer-style performance check can provide more useful condition evidence than a photograph of the instrument powered on. If a microscope is included, test stage motion, focus, detector response and mapping functions as a separate subsystem.
